Prof Ajay K. Garg is a Fellow (PhD) of IIM Bangalore. He joined IIM Lucknow in 2007 and over the past eighteen years has contributed in all activities of IIML be it academic administration, teaching, consulting, research, training or institution building.
He is also currently holding the position of Dean (Faculty) at IIM Lucknow and is also a member of the Board of Governors of IIM Lucknow. He is also the Dean (Research) and Editor of 'Metamorphosis' the journal of IIM Lucknow which is published by SAGE. He is currently the Chairperson of the Budget and Audit Committee of the institute and is responsible for managing the financial statements, investments and internal audit.
Before this he has held the positions of Chairperson PGP (Flagship MBA programme of IIM Lucknow), Chairperson MDP (Executive Education), Chairperson Student Affairs, Chairperson Placements and Chairperson Alumni Affairs at IIM Lucknow.
As Chairperson of the flagship Post Graduate Programme (MBA) from 2019 to 2021 he contributed immensely in skillfully steering the programme during the turbulent Covid-19 period.
He is a founding member of Centre for Public Policy at IIM Lucknow and has been associated with prestigious projects like Arth Ganga (under the aegis of Niti Aayog, NMCG, Ministry of Jal Shakti). From 2021 to 2024 he was also the Programme Director at IIM Lucknow of the prestigious Mahatama Gandhi National Fellowship programme initiated by the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship for creating an ecosystem for skill development at district level in India.
Prof Garg headed the committee responsible for making the First Regulations of IIM Lucknow under IIM Act which were subsequently approved by the Board of Governors of IIM Lucknow and Ministry of Education.
He was the Convener of Task Force set up by Indian Institute of Management, Lucknow for mentoring Indian Institute of Management Sirmaur (Himachal Pradesh) and played a pivotal role in establishing IIM Sirmaur and running it for the first two years. He also held the position of Chairman Post Graduate Programme of IIM Sirmaur from July 2015 to April 2017. As convener he set up a new IIM from scratch and was faculty in-charge till the time the first batch graduated. He is a member of the Board of Governors of IIM Sirmaur since 2016. He is also a member of BWC and Investment Committee of IIM Sirmaur.
Prof Garg is a very sought-after faculty in Finance and he has won awards for the Best Finance Elective in the Post Graduate Programme at IIM Lucknow for the Academic Years 2017-18, 2018-19, 2019-20, 2020-21, 2021-22, 2022-23, 2023-24 and 2024-25 (8 consecutive academic years). He has published several papers in peer reviewed journals and is also a reviewer for top tier journals.
He has undertaken consultancy assignments with corporate and government organizations and has been Programme Director of many Management Development Programmes, Advanced Management Programmes and General Management Programmes (both long and short duration) at IIM Lucknow.
Prof Garg was a member of a three-member high powered judicial committee (headed by a High Court judge) set up by the Government of Uttar Pradesh to probe in to financial irregularities in the Gomti River Front project (involving Rs. 1505 crores) in 2017.
Prof Garg along with his team made the SOP and other protocols for UP-112, which was responsible for managing Covid in Uttar Pradesh during the first Covid wave in 2020. Their efforts were lauded by UP-112. He was also a member of the team which did Oxygen Audit for the UP government during the second Covid wave in April-May 2021.
He is a member of Advisory Committee for MBA and MBA-BKFS programmes of TAPMI, Manipal and is on the Board of Studies of BFSI programme of Goa Institute of Management.
