Dr Bandyopadhyay brings with himself more than two decades of academic, policy research and administrative experiences. Prior to joining IIM Lucknow, he was engaged with International Institute of Sustainable Development (IISD) as a Principal Policy Adviser. In this capacity he has also been leading the work on UNEP India Mission on Measurement of SDG 12. c.1. Besides that, he was associated with India Consensus Project administered jointly by Tata Trust and Copenhagen Consensus Centre, USA. Till recently, he was serving as Associate Professor and Programme Director at the Department of Business and Sustainability at The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) School of Advanced Studies and was also the founding Head of the Department.
He is currently a Member of the Advisory Committee on Green Entrepreneurship Council, CII Godrej Green Business Centre; Member of FICCI National Task Force on ESG; Member of the Steering Committee of Asia Pacific Resource Centre (APRC) of the UN Global Compact Network of India (UNGCNI); Member of the Board of Directors of Enterprise Incubation Centre at IIML and a Member of the Independent ESG Rating Review Committee, ICRA. In the recent past, he was engaged in a research project under the aegis of Remaking the Global Trading System for a Sustainable Future Project, administered jointly by Yale University, Fletchers School at Tufts University and Sridath Ramphal Centre at the University of West Indies and involves studying the implication of Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) on Steel Sector in India. His notable engagement in the past includes serving as a member of the sub-group on transport sector formed by Government of India for providing inputs to the India Chapter of the Energy Technology Perspectives (ETP) 2010 of International Energy Agency (IEA); columnist on energy sector with Financial Express; visiting faculty with United Nations University (UNU-IIST) and Faculty of Management Studies (FMS), University of Delhi; visiting scholar with Asian Growth Institute (AGI), Japan under the aegis of the Kakenhi Grant of the Japanese Society of Promotion of Science (JSPS); transport specialist for a ADB commissioned project on Low Carbon Transport in India and China; invitee consultant with IEA/OECD; Economic officer with Finance Commission, Government of India and Research Officer to erstwhile UN Special Rapporteur on Right to Development.
He is the recipient of Wipro Earthian Faculty Mentor Award in 2018-19 and his research has been published in some of the leading scholarly journals with very high impact factor that include Energy Economics, Energy Policy, International Environment Agreement: Politics, Law and Economics, Annual Review of Environment and Resources, Renewable and Sustainable Energy Reviews and Economic and Political Weekly, among others
His current areas of teaching and research interests include- Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM), Decarbonisation Strategies in Steel Sector, Climate Change and Carbon Markets, ESG, Transport and Environment and various aspects of Business Sustainability and Circular Economy Practices.
He is an alumnus of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) from where he has completed his PhD. He is also an alumnus of Cambridge Institute of Sustainability Leadership, Cambridge University and Babson College, USA from where he has completed programmes on business sustainability and entrepreneurship respectively.
